The Springfield chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha has been granting scholarships to worthy high school and college students since 1963. These awards are funded directly from the proceeds of the fraternity’s annual scholarship dance that is held in the spring. The awards are formally presented by members of the organization at a June reception each year.
Scholarship Applications are distributed to the local high schools, churches and community centers beginning in February of each year. Contact any of the members of the local chapter for applications or additional information.
Beginning 2008, Theta Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is pleased to announce four new scholarships it will award to deserving Western Massachusetts high school seniors. These scholarships are designed to assist students with their college transition, as well as recognize worthy students from the local community for their hard work, dedication to service, and overall successes as a high school student. The scholarships offered are:

Award Description
This award ($1,000) is intended to recognize African American and Hispanic males from Western Massachusetts who are college bound high school seniors who have achieved superior academic ratings in high school. This award honors the distinguished career of one of our charter members. Clifford Flint is a 1957 graduate of Morehouse College and a former teacher and principal in Springfield, MA. Eligibility Applicant must be graduating a senior from a high school in Western Massachusetts and plan to enroll in a 4 year college or university. Selection Criteria Student must • Show superior academic achievement in scholastic activities • Have received academic awards or merits highlighting the student’s academic achievement. • Been recognized by their school or community for academic achievement • Have maintained at least a 3.0 high school G.P.A. • Have a successful interview with the scholarship committee |
Award Description
This award ($1,000) recognizes African American and Hispanic males who have a strong record of leadership and community service in their high school or local community. This award honors the late Marvin P. Lyon Jr. who was committed to community service and leadership development as a former president of our chapter and founder of the Alpha Esquires. Marvin graduated from Longmeadow High School (1986), University of Pennsylvania (1990), and Western New England College Law School, (2000). Eligibility Applicant must be a graduating senior from a high school in Western Massachusetts and plan to enroll in a 4 year college or university. Selection Criteria Student must: • Have held leadership positions in a school governance organization or other school related or community organizations • Regularly participate in community service projects • Must serve as a role model to increase student involvement in community service • Have a successful interview with scholarship committee. |
Frank Buntin Award for Civic Engagement and Social Justice
Award Description
This award ($1,000) recognizes African American and Hispanic males who are active in their community while promoting social justice and equality through collective community action, community awareness campaigns, and community engagement. This award honors the distinguished career of one of our charter members. Frank Buntin is a former president of the Springfield NAACP chapter and has advised several mayoral and gubernatorial campaigns as an advocate for equitable social policy and policy reform.
Eligibility
Applicant must be a graduating senior from a high school in Western Massachusetts and plan to enroll into a 4 year college or university.
Selection Criteria
Student must:
• Create, encourage, or be involved in activities that promote social and economic justice, peace, and racial and cultural harmony.
• Be actively involved and dedicated to volunteer community service and advocacy, especially service to the poor, the oppressed and marginalized.
• Provide leadership in the quest for non-violent means to promote progressive change for the betterment of humanity and the world.
• Have a successful interview with scholarship committee
